678: Faceted Beauty With Lisa Estrella Yang

Lisa Estrella Yang is the Founder and CEO of Faceted Beauty.  Her company was established from her lived experience of rarely Faceted Beauty With Lisa Estrella Yangfitting into molds as a second generation post-war woman of color. “Too short. Too loud. Too tan. Too fem. Not fem enough,” you name it. She heard it and unfortunately still does today.  Growing up in a society that was not built to include different folks, may it be race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, or sexuality, she grew up falsely believing that beauty had boundaries and was one-sided. At a young age Lisa turned to nail art as an outlet to cope with bullying and depression, and discovered the pure joy of adorning her nails as a budding Nail Artist.  Embarking on a self-love journey while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison she created a grassroots movement called “pro-self-esteem” which attracted young women from all over campus to talk about various beauty standards over nail polish sessions. In 2014 Lisa was selected top four out of over 16K talented competitors in Sally Hansen’s nationwide “I Heart Nail Art” competition, thanks to her younger sister’s encouragement on submitting her nail art.  Her dedication to breaking beauty boundaries brought her to Boston, MA where she is actively researching solutions and top tier products in the market to make nail art manicures more accessible for multifaceted beauties from around the world in the comfort of their homes.

Lisa shares her struggles and how she was able to overcome them when she established Faceted Beauty.  She also shares tips that can help you in your own journey to self confidence.

Definition of Self Confidence

Self confidence is owning your truth and allowing that truth to evolve as you grow.

Her Life Before the Discovery of Self Confidence

Lisa was convinced that before discovering another layer of self-confidence is fear and worry that perhaps she was not enough or perhaps she was not the person who she really wants to be. It was scary expanding her boundaries and her view of herself/the world, but they say that what you want is just beyond those fears.

She believes that self-confidence is ever-growing.  She sees life in stages, and in each stage is an opportunity to further discover her truth. With each discovery it adds to her self-confidence, helping her improve from each day prior.

The “AHA” Moment

Lisa’s “aha!” moment was when she was serious about taking time for herself to break down, heal, and rebuild herself after she lost her startup job a month before her birthday. Amid losing her job, she was also processing a tough breakup with someone who was at the time the love of her life and had planned her life around him.  She was and still invested in being the best version of herself each day. A week before her birthday she felt healed enough to start a beauty company, Faceted Beauty. Personally she had to hit that rock bottom to relight that fire under her bum to get going!
