701: Be Strong With Dr. Jamie Chiu

Dr. Jamie Chiu is a clinical psychologist.  She has a private practice therapy working with Asian girls and young women overcome Be Strong With Dr. Jamie Chiumental health challenges.  She is also the co-founder of The Brightly Project which envisions a world where no teen ever has to feel so hopeless and desperate that they try to end their own lives.  Dr. Jamie been invited to share her work at TEDx and at education and mental health conferences across Asia. In 2016, she was honoured to be chosen as one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs.  She has also been named one of Hong Kong’s most influential young leaders in by Tatler’s Generation T, and was featured in the Real Leaders 100 Young Visionarieslist. Dr. Jamie has also been selected by Channel NewsAsia as one of their Champions for Change, a series celebrating 20 individuals whose imagination, talents, and efforts have uplifted their communities here in Asia.  Her goal is to continue helping young people overcome their challenges, know that they belong, and feel hopeful for their future.

Her Life Before the Discovery of Self Confidence

Dr. Jamie used to be nervous and anxious.  She moved to Ghana at 6 and didn’t speak any English.  She was  picked on for being the only asian kid.  She felt that she was not good enough and her parents separated when she was a teenager.  Dr. Jamie felt insecure and constantly self doubting herself.

The “AHA” Moment

For Dr. Jamie, something clicked and saw things differently.

In her early 20s, her mom divorced her father and saw her mom stand up for herself which inspired Dr. Jamie to be strong.
