Always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

Definition of Self Confidence

Self confidence is when you believe that you’re capable of whatever you put your mind to.  Confidence in one’s own abilities and judgment with the ability to tune out discouragement from others.

Her Life Before the Discovery of Self Confidence

It was terrible for Aisha.  She put a lot of weight on what others thought of her, and was too easily affected or discouraged by others and because of that, she didn’t reach her full potential.  She was quick to compare herself to others, and culturally (such as in Japanese culture), there’s a huge tendency to be really harsh on yourself, and that was a trait she had as well. Because of the way that she was, she was more susceptible to peer pressure as well.

The “AHA” Moment

This might not sound the best, but Aisha’s AHA moment actually came after receiving external validation through writing.  She was doing acting and music which wasn’t going so well. Acting opportunities died down within a year after she started, and she almost signed with a Japanese record label, Avex, twice but in the end, was rejected, and it hurt more the second time because it was that much closer to signing a contract. So, in addition to being in a place where she was really bogged down with rejection in multiple areas, she was in a relationship with someone who, in general, was discouraging.  She had always liked writing, and began working on creative writing again as something of a therapeutic exercise but the person who she was in a relationship with at the time, in addition to being discouraging in general, discouraged her writing, and encouraged her to focus on other things.  Instead of doing acting and another “impractical” occupation like writing, to just focus on acting and a more practical occupation like biz dev in healthcare. And it was terrible. In a way, she kept working on her writing out of spite to that person.  She also likes to clarify that she doesn’t recommend accomplishing things out of spite but she thinks if you have negative energy like that and need an outlet for it, then it’s best to roll that into being productive.

After her first play was published, she realized that it’s so important to believe in yourself and not let others discourage you from working on what you really love. Because you know yourself the best and that means you know what you should be working on, and you’re often more capable than you think. If others are discouraging you, then it’s often indicative of their own lack of confidence. If she had taken that guy’s advice, then she would be miserable right now, and would not have accomplished anything worthwhile.

But in addition to that realization, there was a long journey to self-love, and she is still on that journey; loving oneself enough to not be too harsh and to recognize and celebrate all of your victories and accomplishments, even the little ones.

Her Life After the Discovery of Self Confidence

Aisha has accomplished so much more now, because she believes in herself enough to go after what she wants.  She is not afraid of what other people think of her.  She is working on more passion projects and taking her passions more seriously. She produced her own film project, and is planning on recording and releasing her own music. She is not susceptible to peer pressure, and she just does what makes her happy.

The One Self Confidence Tip For the Listener

Acknowledge that building your confidence will most likely not be a sudden shift, it will be a journey. Also, even if you do doubt your own abilities and judgment, it’s very often not the most talented people who succeed but the people who weren’t afraid to try. So take small steps by pushing yourself a little bit out of your comfort zone. Another thing is, confidence comes from within yourself, but it’s important to surround yourself with a good support group filled with encouraging people. It makes it that
much easier to push and believe in yourself.
