533: Now You Know With Nicki Sun

Nicki Sun is the creator and host of her own talk show, “Now You Know”, which has pioneered the path for independent on-camera hosts while creating a platform that spotlights Asian American and multi-ethnic communities. Through her show, she has been privileged to collaborate and work with this generation’s top talent, from digital influencers and athletes to Grammy Award-winning artists and entrepreneurs. Equally tech-savvy and equipped behind the camera, Nicki has produced television shows and content for Myx TV, Verizon, Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (formerly known as Valley Performing Arts Center), Chef Martin Yan, and Google–just to name a few. Her latest project includes rebooting her YouTube channel and website to feature more behind-the-scenes and tech videos.

Nicki shares why she started her show and how she was able to realize that she can create content in her own way while showcasing Asian Americans who are taking the non-stereotypical route to pursue a career.

Her Life Before the Discovery of Self Confidence

Nicki was incredibly lucky to have parents who supported her and made her feel like she could do anything. She was definitely a nerd and tomboy growing up in school. No boys liked her. She never wore makeup and she legit never cared what she wore to school. An everyday outfit would be an oversized hoodie over baggy basketball shorts, with her blue Iversons. Nicki also loved wearing boxers. In short, she doesn’t think her confidence suffered here because she literally did not give a f*ck. Also, because she did not give a f*ck, it gave her more time to invest in not only more hours of sleep, but also time to truly discover what she loved to do and what she was good at. However, as she got into college and was interested in being a face on camera to represent her community, she started re-evaluating her intentions and caring more about how she presented herself to the world.

The “AHA” Moment

When Nicki’s father was diagnosed with cancer, Nicki felt helpless and was trying to figure out how to help her father. She was recommended to check out Asian American donor program but she didn’t know how to ask for strangers to be a donor for her father. Since YouTube was just starting, she decided creating a video would be a great idea since there were people of bigger influence using the platform for the same purpose. This made her realize she can spread her message in a fun way and also represent Asian Americans who are pursuing non-stereotypical paths. Nicki decided to create her talk show call Now You Know.

Her Life After the Discovery of Self Confidence

Nicki is still discovering herself everyday and to her, that’s the joy and beauty of life. She also asks herself why she created her show when she has bad days. Nicki knows that if she can help one person be motivated to live life on their terms with her talk show, her job is done.
